The Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS) and Global Health Research Cluster has organised a forum themed 'Regional Young Scientists Scientific Forum', from June 3 to 5 held at the Mini Lecture Theatre 1, Technology Hub (IBM), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
Dr Sagheer Ahmad, Research Fellow at PAPRSB IHS, UBD was one of the participants who presented his working paper titled 'Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease'.
He started his presentation by giving a definition of Alzheimer's Disease (AD), a slow progressive disease of the brain that is characterised by impairment of memory and eventually disturbing reasoning planning, language and perception.
He mentioned that AD is the most common cause of dementia among people aged 65 and above. People aged beyond 65 are prone to double AD and it is predicted that it can affect one in 85 people globally by 2050.
He also stressed that in year 2010, scientists had stated that over 35.6 million people had AD.
In his presentation, he also pointed out several diagnoses that can assist to identify AD, for instance; Neuropsychological tests and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
An early diagnosis is important as he also stressed out that treatment can start earl which would also help scientists to learn about the causes and development of AD.
The participants of the forum ranged from PhD students from various countries; health professional researchers and academicians from various universities.
