Today’s ‘IN FOCUS’ is a Cohort 5 medical student

Umer Khan is currently a 3rd year student. He is from Canada.

Umer in general

with a colleague, senior's graduation night
How old are you? - 22

Which part of Canada were you from? - Vancouver

What do your friends usually call you? - Umer

Describe yourself in 3 words. – funny, easygoing, yet motivated

What are the 3 things you can’t live without? – oxygen, water, and glucose

What is your favourite quote? – “The journey is more important than the destination”

What is your hobby? – being active, playing basketball

Do you have any idols that inspire you? – Mohammad Ali, Kevin Garnett, Terry Fox, many others also

Umer’s opinions

What is the most important thing in life? – to never give up, (NO SURRENDER, NO RETREAT)

If you have a million dollar, what would you do with it? – 1 million nowadays isn’t much. I’d probably invest it or save it, not get carried away spending. But it would be great for paying school fees.

If you have one way to help the others, what would that be? – finally become a doctor, help people everyday.

If you were given one chance to reverse time, when would it be and why? – go back to 5 seconds before I watched FRIDAY by Rebecca Black for the first time, and stop myself

If you could build a house anywhere, where would that be? – Under the sea of course

Umer on personal matter
Where do you want to go on a vacation and why? – Hawaii, or somewhere else tropical.
What is your favourite series? – The Office

What is the best and the worst movie to you? – Best: Gladiator Worst: Robin hood was a huge disappointment.

What is your dream car and why? – don’t have anything specific in mind, but I prefer comfort over power and speed

I understand that you like some sports. What are they? What are your favourite teams? Want to share why you like them? – ice hockey – Vancouver canucks, they’re Vancouver’s team, and have a good chance of winning it all; basketball – dallaaaaaaaaaaaaaas mavericks, they’re usually underappreciated, and dirk nowitzki is simply amazing

Do you have any favourite restaurants here in Brunei? – Thai place in jerudong, never remember its name….

Do you have any favourite meals? - I love lasagna ;)

Can you cook? – Enough to survive

Umer as a medical student at IHS

How’s med school so far? – ok laaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Describe your life as a medical student. – difficult at times, but overall fun, and a great learning experience What is your favourite medical subject? – so far the neurology module was cool

What is your favourite PBL case so far? – I don’t even remember cases that far back, I’ll go with multiple sclerosis, that PBL session went better than most

Among your cohort 5 colleagues, who is your best buddy? – hard to name 1 :P (sorry Mizah, the rest will kill me)

Describe your best moment in IHS? – Wasn't in IHS but the KK trip last year was pretty sweet
Where are you planning to go after this? – I haven’t decided which partner medical school yet, but eventually I would like to end up back in Canada
Umer as a future medical doctor
Why do you want to become a doctor? Do you have any inspirations? – nothing specific, it’s a rewarding and respected profession.

Have you thought about your specialty of interest? – I enjoyed our neurology attachments, but there's still a long way to go, I might like something else

Any study tips for us? – Make your own very compressed notes so you don’t have to go back to the book, makes studying more efficient. And write things down over and over and over again without looking to help in memorization.

Any advice/word of success to the juniors? – it might be hard right now but its only gonna get harder. Enjoy it.

Thank you Umer for today's In Focus. We hope you're enjoying the holiday. We'll see you next semester!
