Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah, accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Majeedah Nuurul Bolkiah, was on hand to officiate the name change.
Dean of PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences Dr Anita Aziz said that renaming of the institution holds much more significance than just a change of name.
"This is a very big landmark for us. When the institute was built in 2000, it only catered to medicine but it quickly expanded. It now has 17 different programmes, excluding research," said the dean during the renaming ceremony at the institute's building at UBD.
"This is a rapidly expanding faculty so the name PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences is a good representation of the different disciplines taught under this faculty," she added.
Dean of Students at UBD's Student Affairs Section Dk Nurolaini Pg Hj Muhd Kifli said: "This is a very significant change because, I have been with the Institute of Medicine (IM) since 2004 and for the past six years we have been calling the building IM. The change of name will therefore signify a bigger population of the IM community."
"With this name change, we are now expanding to a more broader discipline which includes nursing, midwifery, biomedical science and hopefully more allied health professions will be included under this faculty or institute in the future," she added.
UBD Vice Chancellor Dr Hj Zulkarnain Hj Hanafi spoke of the history, development and mission of the institute.
He said the institute hopes to further improve the quality of its programmes and to widen its scope of research.
"All these initiatives is in line with the vision of the university towards achieving international standards, that is to become one of the top 50 universities in Asia," he said.
Her Royal Highnesses were invited to view the institute's corporate video before Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah commemorated the name change by signing a plaque with the new name of the institute.
