SIX medical students from Japan's Kagawa University yesterday began a five-week course at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB) Institute of Health Science, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The students are participating in the Fifth International Summer Medical School Programme 2011, an annual exchange programme between PAPRSB Institute of Health Science and Kagawa University's Faculty of Medicine.

Dr Suwarni Hj Mohd Diah, the programme chairperson, said the participants will attend lectures, problem-based learning sessions, clinical and communication skills, laboratory sessions and tutorials during the course.

"Participants will also have a chance to gain knowledge and hands-on experiences from clinical placements in health centres and hospitals throughout Brunei," she said.

She went on to say that all sessions will be conducted in English as this will provide the opportunity for Japanese students to enhance their English language proficiency as well as their communications skills.

In addition, the participants may also have the opportunity to learn about Brunei's way of life and culture through staying with foster family and visits to various cultural and heritage places such as Kampong Ayer and the Royal Regalia building.

They will also visit the Belait district and experience Brunei's unspoiled natural heritage by going to the Kuala Belalong Field Study Centre in the remote area of Temburong.

"This year, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience the special, spiritual and social atmosphere of the holy month of Ramadhan," said Dr Suwarni.

She hoped that all Japanese students in the programme would enjoy their stay and bring a lot of good memories from their experiences in Brunei.

At the end of the course, participants will be assessed by a written examination and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

The students are also assessed on their presentations and report-writing skills.

Present at the launch of the programme yesterday was Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Corporate and Administration at UBD Hjh Anis Faudzulani Hj Dzulkiflee and Dean of PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences Dr Hjh Maslina Hj Mohsin. — Sally Piri
