Our Faculty has been sending students to Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan for real-life working experience and academic clinical attachments. On June 21st, 2012, the main national hospital has now been accredited as a teaching hospital. The accreditation plaque was hang by Minister of Health, YB Pehin Dato Hj Adanan.
And then in the Belait District, for Suri Seri Begawan Hospital accreditation ceremony:
SURI Seri Begawan Hospital was formally accredited as a teaching hospital on June 21st, 2012, its Medical Superintendent urged clinicians and students to question current clinical practices, stating that good may no longer be good enough.
The aim, said Ang Swee Hui is to be better than good.
Suri Seri Begawan Hospital successfully achieved its teaching hospital accreditation yesterday in association with the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa'adatul BolkiahInstitute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
In an introductory speech, Ang said the accreditation not only serves as a recognition of the contributions by doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in clinical education but also forms a bridge for future cooperations between the hospital and the UBD institute in areas of teaching, research and patient care.
"As a teaching hospital, I hope we can continue to develop an environment of intellectual inquisitiveness and dynamism. I would encourage our clinicians and students to question current clinical practices especially in areas where good may no longer be enough, where better is available," he said.
He added that the learning and understanding process is a foundation towards continued improvements in clinical care where he believes that a teaching hospital's status is a powerful lever in their quest for excellence in patient care.
Meanwhile, Chair Professor David Koh from the institute said officers and staff were urged to identify their work errors through self analysis and discussions in order for constructive changes to be made in becoming a teaching hospital. He said this is needed to sustain its new status, adding that accreditation comes with improvement of public trust as an organisation that values quality and patient safety.
At the same time, there should be a culture open to learning from adverse events and safety concerns. This was important for hospital employees to understand as the professor emphasised on reporting one's errors as not only a means of steering away from mistakes but also improving the focus and accuracy of work especially when dealing with the specific needs of a patient.
He said that the lack of reported errors will often lead to most of the cases being concealed in fear of distrust from patients and if not shared or corrected through reports or discussions, deaths will follow.
"If errors are attributed primarily to systemic causes, staff may not learn from their errors," said the chair professor. He urged for the employees to achieve balance in their workflow to allow them to take personal responsibility for their errors and discuss them constructively.
Present to officiate the accreditation was Minister of Health Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya JohanPahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Md Yusof who received the plaque from UBD acting chancellor Associate Professor Dr Hjh Zorah Hj Sulaiman and then handed it over to Suri Seri Begawan Hospital's Chief Executive Officer Mohmad Hj Abd Hamid. The minister proceeded to officiate the accreditation by placing the plaque on display at the hospital's main building.
