Tuesday, March 24, 2009 · 0 comments

World Kidney Day was celebrated in Brunei last Sunday, 22nd March at the Health Promotion Centre in Berakas. The 3rd Year Students were invited to attend the event and it proved to be quite informative. Did you know that 1 in 10 person in Brunei has kidney problems? And that more than 75% of the kidney problems in Brunei is due to Diabetes or Hypertension?

An exhibition was set up showing the different types of kidnay problems and their management and there were also free screening tests for Creatinine and Blood Glucose levels. Many thanks to Dr Jackson Tan, co-chairperson of the event for inviting us.

HAPPY workshop raises AIDS awareness at UBD

By Achong Tanjong

Health, Safety and Environment Exco under the Student Representative Council of UBD in collaboration with Brunei Darussalam Aids Council yesterday organised a HAPPY programme or HIV Awareness Programme For Peers and Youths.
The three-hour workshop was attended by 250 students from UBD and other schools, as well as members of the public.

The programme sought to elevate awareness of HIV amongst youths and encourage behavioural changes, as well as assist the target group to make the right choices.

Activities during the event included a debate (Bubble of thoughts), What's your Opinion, Three Boats Game and vital information on HIV Basics.

The HAPPY programme was carried out at UBD for the first time and the organiser is looking forward to conducting the workshop again for students who missed the event.

The organiser hoped the workshop has created awareness that AIDS is not over and that the public, especially youths, should be aware that HIV cases have risen over the years. "It needs you to make this world a better place to live in".

The workshop was conducted by Iswandy Ahmad from Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council.

Also present were Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Dr Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, and President of Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAC), Datin Hjh Edah.

Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council is a non-profit non-governmental organisation established in 2001. The council is involved in work to raise awareness of AIDS and HIV, as well as youth, community and voluntary work.
