What the first years have been up to for the past year...

Posted by Beaver on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Just a general picture of what we do while waiting for a class... We usually sit in the classroom, but the basement rooms were filled at that time...
Photo taken on Ibnu's phone.

Photo of us girls and a few background "ornaments".. ehehe...
This picture was taken during the earlier months in the first semester, when we were still very shy creatures.. ehehhe... Photo taken when Jo Wen was about to leave UBD for Australia...

Don't we look suave in our white coats? :D

Fun Facts about SLEEP!

Posted by Beaver on

For most people, we sleep at least 8 hours per day.. ( might be a little bit different for medical students.. hehe..) Below is a list of some amazing facts about sleep:

1. The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses.
2. It’s impossible to tell if someone is really awake without close medical supervision. People can take cat naps with their eyes open without even being aware of it.
3. Anything less than five minutes to fall asleep at night means you’re sleep deprived. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes, meaning you’re still tired enough to sleep deeply, but not so exhausted you feel sleepy by day.
4. Dreams, once thought to occur only during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, also occur (but to a lesser extent) in non-REM sleep phases. It’s possible there may not be a single moment of our sleep when we are actually dreamless.
5. REM dreams are characterised by bizarre plots, but non-REM dreams are repetitive and thought-like, with little imagery - obsessively returning to a suspicion you left your mobile phone somewhere, for example.
6. Elephants sleep standing up during non-REM sleep, but lie down for REM sleep.
7. Some scientists believe we dream to fix experiences in long-term memory, that is, we dream about things worth remembering. Others think we dream about things worth forgetting - to eliminate overlapping memories that would otherwise clog up our brains.
8. Dreams may not serve any purpose at all but be merely a meaningless byproduct of two evolutionary adaptations - sleep and consciousness.
9. Scientists have not been able to explain a 1998 study showing a bright light shone on the backs of human knees can reset the brain’s sleep-wake clock.
10. Ducks at risk of attack by predators are able to balance the need for sleep and survival, keeping one half of the brain awake while the other slips into sleep mode.

Netball Friendly match

Posted by Institute of Medicine in UBD on Monday, May 26, 2008

Interesting play. The kids from FBEBs are nice too. Very talented. But I think IM team manage to score alot. The real superstar in the first rounds are the two birthday girls (Fiza and As) and not forgetting Syukri (who always catch the ball on time) and Kenny (who scores!) First round is 6 to 1 goal. That is 6 goals for IM....yeah!!!! But after that I forgot...Anyone remembers? keke... enjoy the pics

This afternoon, there was a dance rehearsal/workshop for the buddies of the upcoming International Summer Medical School programme. This was be the second of such session. Led by the 'teachers' Mariah and Nadzir, the girls learned their dance moves and the guys their dance/silat moves. The aim is to learn the moves well enough to teach to the Japanese when they come soon. The progress is pretty good so far and here are some photos of the guys in action.

Health Tip: Keeping Off the Weight

Posted by Sateria & Haiza on

Thu May 22, 11:46 PM ET
(HealthDay News) -- Losing weight is a challenge, but keeping it off can even more difficult without a good plan and healthy habits.

Here are suggestions to help you keep the weight off that you've worked so hard to lose, courtesy of the American Heart Association:

Understand what works best for you -- such as what rewards best motivate you, what tempts you most, and what helps you resist those temptations.

Be realistic about how much weight you should lose.

Maintain a good balance of calories taken in versus calories burned.

Get enough exercise. Even a brisk daily walk can help you keep those pounds off.

Keep notes and records of your food intake and daily activity.

Plan your meals, and make healthy food choices at the grocery.

Don't weigh yourself more than once a week.

Plan ahead for holidays, special occasions, and other times when you may be likely to splurge and take in additional calories.

Posted by Institute of Medicine in UBD on Thursday, May 22, 2008

So at last, the IM bloggers held a lunch gathering at Mamih today and discussed further how to improve and maintain this site. IM Family Blog has reached ONE year old!

Here are some pictures and intro of all our blogger for your reading pleasure.

Maria was the founder of the IM Family blogspot. Initially she started this site for her personal blog and ended up writing mostly about IM. Therefore, she changed the title and one year later, another 5 more members joined in to make the blog more interesting.

Haiza is a Lecturer at IM. She was a member of the IM Blogger team since April 2008. Welcome Haiza! She has her camera ready in her handbag all the time. So please beware everyone! Hehe. Do get ready those pretty smiles! A netball freak and she likes to joke and laugh a lot!!

Nadiah is from the very first cohort of Health Science/Medicine. Just finished her final year exams at I.M UBD, she joined the IM family blogger circle because we're like family here! A avid blog hopper in her free time and this is one of the many blogs she contributes to and will be updating! She loves all the IM-mers (staff and students) and will miss them greatly!

Izyan, one of the girls in the second batch. She's about to enter her final year in IM. She enjoys reading novels and watching TV in her free time (which is only during the holidays come to think of it =p) She loves the family environment in IM and likes to check the blog regularly for any news from everyone.

Emma, one of the third batch to join the exclusive IM family, is an internet junkie and likes to cuddle up with a good book. She enjoys blogging for this blogsite tremendously.. :) She likes the color pink... hehe...

Zeti, is the newest member of the blog team. She just joined IM family 6 months ago...Zeti loves all sorts of sport especially running.....True fact about her; she never blogs! So this is a new thing for her... One thing she loves the most...taking photograph (especially candid photos..)...

So now you know who we are. if you have any story or photos to contribute, please contact any one of us at red.institute@gmail.com or approach any one of us.

Keep visiting for more!!!

Beware of SNAKES

Posted by Institute of Medicine in UBD on

Its the 'hot' season where you can see snakes slithering around the IM building. There was one spotted at the back entrance and another one yesterday found in the toilet bowl at the bottom floor's toilet. So be careful, eyes alert at all times. Try to avoid going in and out of the back entrance as many spotted around there. Try not to park your car around that area too.

We have called the estate to get rid of the snakes but no action has been taken yet. Hope they will catch it and we will be safe again.
